Spinfield School Little Rotters
We are the Spinfield School Little Rotters and we are going to tell you about us.
How did we become Little Rotters?
In year 5 we had to give a presentation to our class explaining why we thought we would be perfect for the role when we reached year 6. Then the previous Year Six Little Rotters gave us a full master class on how to collect any food waste and how to put it in the school compost bins safely.
What do we do as a Little Rotter?
We are fully independent and have created a rota to make sure that the compostable food waste gets put in the compost bins, we do this every single day at the end of the school day. As a Little Rotter, we gather all the biodegradable items like fruit and vegetable remains from our mini food waste bins which are in our school playground and the staff room (these bins were funded by the school Parents Association) and empty them into our school compost bins.
Why do we do it?
We do this because we care for the environment and want to make sure our school is clean and tidy and we want to use any compostable food waste to feed the soil. We are a very eco-friendly school and try to include environmentally friendly activities in as many lessons as we can.
For example, we have forest school lessons where we go outside into our nature trail and learn all about nature and plants and how to take care of the environment around us. As Little Rotters, it is our responsibility to make sure that all of our food waste is used properly and in a safe, environmentally friendly way.
We are very privileged to have such an important role and we believe that what we do as a school is going to slowly but surely help make a difference to our beloved planet.
