Tiny pond on our allotment

Our allotment is not a conventional one. We (try to) grow on about ⅔ of the plot and we leave the rest for the local wildlife. This includes compost heaps, berry and current bushes, a couple of fruit trees, a lot of bramble and lots of “weed” (flowering plants).

We have planned on building a pond for a long time and finally, we got to it.

The process was fairly straightforward:

  • we bought a trug

  • we dug a hole a bit larger than the trug

  • we put the rug in place and filled it with water

  • we added a few pond plants from our own pond

  • we placed a branch in the water so anything that didn’t enter the water voluntarily can crawl out easily

Additionally, we planted a few flowers around the pond although we were not very efficient and could only secure plants that weren’t particularly pollinator friendly. This was a bit disappointing but we’ll plan better next time.

The pond will benefit the local wildlife present on and around our plot: insects, frogs, foxes, maybe even hedgehogs. We are very pleased with it.
