Moreton’s bicycle-themed Eco Day

Last June, our school hosted a bicycle-themed Eco Day, packed with exciting activities to promote environmental awareness. The day began with a fantastic bake sale, organized by Teifi and Thea from Remove, offering earth-themed cupcakes alongside some delicious chocolate treats. At lunchtime, Carmen and Katie added a creative twist with bike-themed cupcakes and cookies, which were a hit with everyone.

After lunch, we celebrated the grand opening of our brand-new Cycle Shelter. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Mr. McTaggart, Director of Operations, and Cara, our Lower Sixth Eco Team joint leader. This project was a collaboration between the Eco Team and the grounds staff, with valuable contributions from Miss Blanchard and a beautifully engraved sign created by Mr. Humphreys, honoring the work of the Eco Team and Jane Goodall. Since its opening, the shelter has been widely used by staff who live locally, many of whom now cycle to work instead of driving, further supporting our sustainability goals.

The afternoon featured an engaging QR code trail, starting from the Pavilion and leading participants around the school, with cycling-related questions at each stop. The trail took everyone from Cornflower Farm to The Holroyd Community Theatre, passing by the Swimming Pool. Divisional points were up for grabs for correct answers, adding some friendly competition to the day.

At the Pavilion, students had the chance to hop on the smoothie bikes, generously lent by the Kenney family. "One of the best parts of the day was definitely the smoothie bikes," Carmen said. "We had so much fun and made some delicious smoothies." The day ended on a sweet note with brownies and strawberries served at the Pavilion.
