Bird feeders and bird watching
To help our feathered friends during the winter months, our groups made nourishing bird feeders. They gathered pinecones from the school grounds and dried them out in the Potting Shed before filling them with fat to help them maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosty nights and bird seed to provide them with energy and nutrients.
These were hung in our gardens to encourage a variety of birds to visit. Many of our members took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch by noting the number of each species which landed in their gardens for an hour on a designated weekend. We then sent the information to the RSPB. We saw numerous birds and found counting them was a very relaxing activity, which we all enjoyed!
