Damers First School - Fairy Penguin Nesting Boxes Project

The children were rewarded back in the Summer by the Sealife Centre in Weymouth for their plastic campaign with their own personal tour. Jo Mullen, Aquarist, fairy penguin keeper and the Conservation Coordinator at Sea Life Weymouth came to  speak to the children in more detail about the fairy penguins that have joined the centre from Manly, Australia. As it it is coming into nesting season the Sea Life Centre asked the Men's Shed in Dorchester to make some nesting boxes. The Sea Life Centre asked the children at Damers to decorate the boxes using the theme plastic pollution. The children wanted to teach visitors to the Sea Life Centre about the importance of reducing their plastic by putting facts on the boxes as well as drawing sea creatures being harmed by plastic and plastic floating in the sea. This was a great project that taught the children about fairy penguins as well as extend their knowledge of how harmful plastic can be to ocean wildlife. We are all looking forward to seeing our boxes being used by the fairy penguins.
