Cllr Callum Knowles, Mayor of Ashford Meets the Roots & Shoots Eco Group

On Wednesday, 4th May, the Mayor of Ashford visited Goat Lees Primary School to see for himself all the good things the children and staff have been doing to make our school the most environmentally friendly school we can. The Eco Group had the opportunity to show him around our school, pointing out all our wonderful outside areas we have (not missing the chance to talk about all of our future projects and aspirations) and he was very impressed. So impressed in fact, at the end of the visit he handed the school an 'Environmental Action Civic Award' as recognition of our hard work on Eco-projects that have benefited our school and community, and our continued commitment to the environment. We are so proud to gain this accolade!While he was visiting, he took the time to see our Queen's Jubilee Celebration Tree on our field. Recently, our Roots & Shoots Eco Group attended the Eco Schools Environmental Forum at the Council Chambers where they signed up to be part of 'The Ashford Tree Trail', a community Art Project for the Queen's Jubilee Year. The schools and groups that signed up had to decorate a tree to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, but it had to be decorated with recycled materials. Every year group took part in making 'crown jewels' to decorate the tree (titled - Coronation Day) and the Mayor and his colleague were very impressed.

  

We also just received a 'Woodland Trust Green Schools Award' for the trees we planted for our micro-wood, and have just been awarded the RSPB Wild Challenge Gold Award (we now have all three - Bronze, Silver and Gold). These awards sit alongside our Silver & Gold Roots & Shoots awards which we display with great pride around our school.
