Lowestoft Campus East Coast College – In Touch with Nature project
The Enterprise learners from East Coast College had an idea to create a Wellbeing Garden. They designed this and decided what items would be beneficial.
Together, the learners bought fruit trees and plants that attract bees and butterflies e.g. echinacea and lavender to plant in the wellbeing garden. This was with the money kindly donated by Roots & Shoots.
However, they also bought bedding plants and bulbs to place around different areas of the college in small and large pots to make the college look attractive in spring and summer.
Some members of staff helped the students to plant and care for the trees.
The learners also bought seeds and grew plants to sell in order to make more money for buying items such as bird boxes and bug hotels which have also been placed around college.
The students made bird feeders out of plastic bottles and hung these around the college too. Through these activities, the learners found out about recycling and environmental sustainability.
The Wellbeing Garden was opened by the Princess Royal in December 2021. Staff and students sit in the Wellbeing Garden to eat their lunch or just relax and chat.
