Having Fun Doing Good at the Eton Action Fair
Written by Thomas G. Year 11Dr. Goodall’s Roots & Shoots initiative encourages young people to take practical action to foster positive change for people, animals and the environment. Eton boys came out in force at this year’s Eton Action Fair on Saturday 16 September to do just that, raising more than £30,000 for five Eton Action charities, which were chosen by Eton students. They are:
- ABC to Read, supporting children facing difficulty learning to read by working with them in primary schools across Berkshire
- Action Cerebral Palsy, spreading awareness of the challenges facing children and young people living with cerebral palsies, and their families
- Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia and Alzheimer’s disease research charity
- Siobhan’s Trust, providing food and support to internally displaced refugees in Ukraine
- Windsor Food Share, providing non-perishable foods, toiletries and cleaning products to any local household in need.
According to the Eton’s official reporting, more than 3,000 people from nearby communities came to the fair, which was held in School Yard, the oldest part of Eton’s campus. There, some 100 local non-profits, artisans and small businesses hosted stalls to help raise funds. Visitors enjoyed delicious food, raffles, games and performances by dance groups, choirs, a steel band, and a well-received search and rescue dog demonstration.This was the 50th anniversary of the Eton Action Fair, and Eton students went all out with a bouncy castle, the Ocean Express Play Bus, face painting and an inflatable assault course, among other amusements – all to support these very good causes.
