60 years ago Dr Jane Goodall first set foot at the Gombe Streams National Park to begin her ground-breaking research into the chimpanzees there. Her work, and the work of the hundreds of conservationists over the decades since, has changed the way we understand and value these amazing animals and the environment they live in. Gombe 60 is a huge celebration all around the world, with Roots & Shoots groups and individuals everywhere inspired and inspiring others to make the changes that will make this planet better for the people, plants and animals that call it home. Read more about Gombe 60There have been all sorts of amazing projects going on, and we have another one we’d love you to get involved in (and spread the word to encourage your friends and families to try too). It’s fun, creative and perfect if you’re stuck at home!

Creativity + environment = prizes

We have not one but two special competitions for you to help us celebrate 60 years of Jane Goodall’s work at the Gombe Streams National park. The first is an art competition, the second is a creative writing competition (more on both below) and if you enter you could win some amazing prizes. You have until Wednesday 14th July 2021 to enter. 

    Art Competition

•     1st Prize: Personal video/ written message from Dr Jane and £50 to put towards art supplies
•     2nd Prize: Signed book by Dr Jane and £25 to put towards art supplies
•     3rd Prize: Mr H Junior and £15 to put towards art supplies

    Writing Competition

•     1st Prize: Personal video/ written message from Dr Jane and £50 to spend books

Get arty for Gombe 60

Show us your creativity with paint, pencils, pastels - or even digitally! Download this amazing picture from the beautiful Gombe 60 colouring book, pick one (or more if you like) images to colour in, get your colours ready and show us your best work. Capture the beauty of nature, the beautiful chimps of Gombe, and the sense of hope that lives there with them. Next, share the picture with us, which you can do by putting it up on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook, or sending it to us via email (address below). It’s REALLY important that you include @JaneGoodallUK so we can see your entry.  

Stories that can change the world

Our second competition is all about telling stories. Stories are powerful and can change the world; they can encourage and inspire, make people think differently and call people to action. For this competition, we’d love you to write a story based around the chimps of Gombe. There are lots of different things you can do; you might want to tell the story of Jane’s first meeting with the chimps, but from a chimp’s perspective. You could write a day in the life of a chimp. You could tell us the life story or adventures of some of them.You’ll need to do a little research, and you can find lots of that information on the Jane Goodall Institute website. Once your story is written, you can email it to us (address below) 

How to submit your entry

Once you’ve completed your artwork and/or written your story, you need to send it to us. For the artwork, you can submit it by posting it on social media (Twitter, Facebook or Instagram) and including @JaneGoodallUK and #Gombe60, or by emailing it to jasmina@janegoodall.org.ukFor the story, you will need to email it to us at jasmina@janegoodall.org.uk, and we’d also encourage you to share what you’re writing about on a social media post, including @JaneGoodallUK and #Gombe60The deadline for entry is Wednesday 14th July 2021.The winners will be contacted directly either via social media or email, depending on how they entered the competition, and will also be announced on the Roots & Shoots UK website and social media channels.  

Competition rules

1. This competition is open to residents of the UK including Northern Ireland.
2. You can enter both the art competition and the story competition.
3. Entrants under the age of 18 must have the permission of their parent/s or guardian/s.
4. Winners will be judged by Tara Golshan, Executive Director of Roots & Shoots UK.
5. The organisers decision is final.
6. The competition closes for entries on the Wednesday 14th July 2021 and the winner will be notified no more than 28 days later.
7. It is the entrants responsibility to check for notification of a winning entry, eg by checking email spam filters and social media messaging.
8. All entrants consent to their artwork/story being used/shared by Roots & Shoots across their website and social media channels, and used for future campaigns.
9. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots UK reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time and to suspend any competition or giveaway at any time.
