Feeding people in need through learning

There are worse things to be addicted to than learning. But this is exactly what playing Freerice does to you. The organisation whose motto is ‘Learn, play & give back with freerice’ was set up by John Breen, a computer programmer in 2007 who wanted to help his son’s learning. In 2009 he donated the programme to the World Food Programme.

Freerice is an educational trivia game that helps people learn and get smarter while making a difference for people around the world. Every question answered correctly raises the money equivalent to the price of 10 grains of rice for the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work in saving and changing lives around the world.

The money is raised through sponsors whose advert is displayed under the questions. The children (or adults!) can choose from various topics, including maths, English, history, geography, languages and more. The questions get harder as the gamers get better at answering. Addiction galore for all good reasons!
