Canning tomatoes

Tomatoes are a staple in our diet - we eat a lot of pasta, stews and curries - so we try to grow tomatoes every year. While tomatoes are inexpensive, organic tomatoes aren’t and this way we don’t have any packaging waste either. Last year didn’t work out but this year, in spite of the very cold and wet spring, we were able to grow and can tomatoes.

The children helped every step of the way. They sowed the seeds, replanted the young plants, helped water them and then loved harvesting the ripe fruit.

We don’t have a large garden but we managed to grow a few varieties. I bought the seeds from a lovely company (Real seeds) that doesn’t compromise with hybrid seeds and has lots of traditional varieties. Technically we’d be able to harvest the seeds but that is something that needs to wait yet another year. Hopefully next year though!
