The Long Eaton School Hosts World Environmental Fun Day

The rhythmic beating of The Long Eaton School’s Drum-atic Steel Band met guests and exhibitors as they arrived for the opening of the World Environmental Fun Day on Wednesday 4 July.  Headteacher Neil Calvert welcomed everyone to the day and Eco School and sustainability Coordinator Barbara James gave an introduction about the event and recapped about the projects they had taken part in over the previous twelve months. Rotary President Graham Pidcock presented Water for The world Sponsored Swim certificates to those who had taken part. The funds raised will go to build a deep bore well in Uganda.Student’s  Kate Williams spoke about becoming a UNEP Climate Justice Ambassador at a recent Plant For The Planet tree Academy held at the school.Year eleven student, Daisy Kelsey, told the audience about the very successful Wild flower meadow that had been built on the school playing fields with the help of the community. One of the school’s recycling projects had been collecting ‘keys for the homeless’ people had brought into school their unwanted old keys which would be sold as scrap metal,  these were presented to Kevin Curtis from the Canaan Trust. First aid provision was ably covered by the Long Eaton School’s First Aid Team – consisting of students from year 9 – 12.Professor Neil Champness, Chair of Chemical Nano science at the University of Nottingham, congratulated the school on the environment work that had been carried out and gave a brief overview about his work at the University and the importance of science in our everyday lives.Angela Tibke from Tidy Britain’s Eco Schools presented Barbara James with a plaque for ‘Eco Green Flag Ambassador Award’.  The school is the first secondary school in the midlands to receive this accolade.The Mayor of Erewash Borough council Mrs Jennifer Hulls officially opened the Environment Day.  Over 350 visitors from other schools and members of the public joined the school in the afternoon.
