TASIS Update- Wildlife talks, Endangered Animals and Sharing in the Roots & Shoots Family

Our Roots & Shoots Wildlife Club had a busy few weeks. Firstly, we had a visit from Jo at David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. She came to talk to us about the foundation’s work with endangered animals. This was a perfect talk for us, as we have been learning about endangered animals. The Fifth Grade Roots & Shoots group also got involved, as they are studying animal classification in science, and also focusing on endangered animals. They are making t-shirts with information painted on them about their chosen animal. As well, they are doing extensive research for a report that will be shared with the group in PowerPoint presentations.The Roots & Shoots Wildlife Club had a special Skype exchange with our South African Roots & Shoot’s Family! Lebo “joined” us for part of our club meeting. He told us how he works with his students in Johannesburg, and then we each shared things about our projects and us. Lebo got to see us prepare to plant vegetable and herb seeds, which we would then place in a greenhouse in our garden. He told us about all the planting his children are doing, including planting much-needed trees. We decided that we would Skype soon with his students. They could not join us on this day, as they were busy taking exams. We have plans to meet “face” to “face” on Skype! We also discussed coordinating a project for Earth Day in 2016.How exciting this all is!! Now, we are busy working on making wire sculptures of three endangered animals, which we will decorate. These will be placed around our school to bring attention to ways of helping these animals. We have learned that it is possible to make positive changes by taking action to preserve animals at risk!
