T-Shirt Re-Cycling Mission

SubjectEach year over 2 billion t-shirts are sold worldwide. The production of one t-shirt uses 700 gallons of water. The production of cotton textiles also releases   by-products of starch, paraffin dyes, pesticides and other harmful products into the air and soil.In 2004 the UK imported approximately 460 million t-shirts. Each t-shirt could have been in 3 different countries during its production. The CO2 emissions from air miles would be enormous.  Each year the UK fashion and textile industry is responsible for about 3.1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions and 1.5 million tonnes of solid waste in the form of discarded and unused threads, fabrics and clothes.Only about an eighth of our reusable textiles and clothing gets given to charities. About 74% gets thrown away and ends up in a landfill.We thought why throw away a t-shirt into the rubbish bin where it will waste away when we could give it a new lease of life? AimOur aim is to re-cycle as many old t-shirts as possible and make them into new products.Our aim is to make scarves, bracelets, headbands, dog toys, cat toys and bags. We want to get as many students involved in the project as possible to not only raise awareness but we are hoping to sell what we make and raise money for Charity.
