Students Keeping Applemore Tidy
The legacy of Applemore College’s Clean for the Queen Litter Picking event in March lives on, with a litter picking event prior to Reach 2016 and student litter picking teams continuing to try to keep the school grounds litter free and sharing the Eco Committee’s ‘Love Where You Learn’ slogan.
On a daily basis, before school starts, a team of student volunteers can been seen with their litter picking equipment, helping the site staff keep Applemore tidy, by focussing on specific ‘black spot’ litter areas within the school grounds that have been identified by the student led Eco Committee.Litter Picking Team Leader Summer Risbey commented “It’s really about showing everyone that we need to start clearing up around school to protect the wildlife and plant life here. We’re right next door to the New Forest.”The message is getting through, with more and more students are getting involved with litter picking. In preparation for Applemore College’s Reach 2016 – Multicultural Music and Arts Festival on Friday 13th May, School Governors joined a team of 18 students to collect litter from the edges of the field where the marquee for Reach 2016 will be sited. The sun shone on the enthusiastic team and 9 bags of rubbish were collected in an hour. Daniel Levy worked hard during the litter pick saying “It really helped to have a lot of people litter picking on the field. The rubbish went about 3m back in to the bushes and so some of it was hard to reach. It doesn't look such a mess now and this makes me feel proud.”
Miss Eskriett, Assistant Head Teacher, commented “It is excellent that students are focussing on keeping the school grounds litter free, and we are grateful to New Forest District Council for loaning us the Clean for The Queen litter picking equipment to help us prepare for Reach 2016. Our local community will be able to come along to enjoy our Multicultural Music & Arts Festival and so I am delighted that our students are keen to be involved in the preparations for what will be a fantastic event.”
