Re:cycled 2009 @ Holland Park School
Green was most certainly the new black on June 18th at Holland Park School. Following the introduction of the schools first ever recycling scheme back in September, students on the Roots & Shoots committee wanted to put on an event to raise awareness of recycling at the school.The school’s main hall gained a catwalk so that students and teachers could showcase the latest in recycled fashion. We were sponsored by two local companies, WornAgain and JunkyStyling, who provided clothing and accessories to be modelled by the teachers, whilst students had created their own designs, entirely from recycled materials. The ArtFactory, a recycled art company based in Essex, ran a workshop day to help the students with their designs.
As the audience arrived they wandered the recycled sculptures and indulged in cupcakes and drinks that had been donated to us by local companies. A video documenting the 'making of Re:cycled' opened the show with comments from students explaining why recycling is important to them.
The audience were captivated as the students and teachers took to the catwalk, each modelling a piece of clothing made entirely from recycled materials. Volunteer sixth formers controlled the catwalk to make sure everyone met their cue. A drum performance by Year 10 students used plastic drums that had once held car paint at the Ford Factory to create a piece of music with glow sticks too! The effort put in by all students involved clearly paid off as the finale saw a standing ovation from the crowd!
Tara Golshan from JGI UK came as one of our judges, accompanied by Lyn MacFarlane from the ArtFactory and Abi Hawkes, one of our Design and Technology teachers. They had a really tough job but eventually chose their favourite design. The winner of the recycled design competition was Linh An who impressed the judges with her skirt made from Financial Times newspapers. Linh’s prize was a VIP weekend at London Zoo with her family to go behind the scenes and meet the animals.The event raised £300. The money will be split between Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Reserve and London Zoo Dormouse Project.

I am honoured to have worked with such a dedicated and creative group of students. We have most definitely raised awareness of recycling in the school community."
