Our Recycling Campaigns!

Here at Goat Lees, we take recycling very seriously and are always on the lookout for interesting recycling schemes. Obviously, we make sure we are recycling everything we can, day-to-day: paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, ink and printer cartridges, cooking oil from our school kitchens, batteries and old PC equipment.Over the past year or so, we have also looked at recycling other items maybe not so obviously linked to school, like taking part in the (Re)Love Our Stuff second hand clothes and holding used books swaps, the Iron Man crisp packet collection for insulated blankets for the homeless and our partnership with EMR Scrap Metal Recycling Centre to collect and recycle used food tins, drinks cans and any other unwanted metal items. More recently, our Roots & Shoots Eco Group came across the 'Recycle to Read' campaign run by Wastebusters where you can recycle batteries for books and, as we collect batteries for recycling anyway, we thought it would be good to sign up to have the possibility of being awarded free books for the school library; not only are we helping to prevent batteries being thrown away, we are also benefiting the children with lovely new books. We managed to collect 63kg of batteries last term and was awarded £30 of book vouchers from the 'Recycle to Read' hosts to spend with Harper Collins. We have also been submitted into the monthly £100 Book Voucher Draw, but haven't been lucky in that as yet. Still, we are continuing to collect more batteries and fingers crossed we are chosen for the big win!It is nice to see there are more and more projects out there to encourage schools to promote the importance of recycling to their pupils, and the children always take on these projects with such enthusiasm.
