Natural weedkiller

It is important to us that our allotment is as natural as it’s possible. We don’t use any type of pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. As a consequence, the soil on our plot is teeming with life, it is full of all sort of creepy-crawlies which are lovely to observe. We also have a lot of weeds in our raised beds that are… not so lovely to observe. Some ‘weeds’ we encourage to stay, such as dandelion. We harvest some of it and leave the rest for the bees. We currently have one bed dedicated for dandelion. The rest of them we tackle with cardboard. Every spring we collect as many cardboard boxes as possible and instead of recycling them, we reuse them. The larger the box the better. For example the box that our favourite ethical toilet paper is delvered in is ideal for this purpose. This time we prepared a bed for potatoes. We covered it with cardboard boxes and held these down with bricks. Later on we’ll put soil or woodchips on top of the cardboard.Once the bed was covered with cardboard we cut holes on them and put the potatoes in. These will provide us with lovely new potatoes in about 10 weeks time to harvest and eat.
