Damers First School - Plastic Free Status

Damers First School has been awarded Plastic Free School Status by Surfers Against Sewage. The school had to complete five objectives which included writing to industries, creating a plastic free legacy and involving your local MP.

The children wrote letters to companies connected with the school asking them not to use plastic. These included Cool Milk who have agreed to deliver the milk in glass bottles. The children have encouraged the community to collect printing cartridges/toners, writing instruments, biscuit wrappers to raise money for the school but also to do their bit for the environment. They also got Oliver Letwin MP involved and he came to the school to speak to the children about their plastic campaign and to see what he could do to support their work. The PTA also put on their first Plastic Free event. There is still lots more to do in the school and the community to reduce plastic. The children will be carrying on this campaign. The School also won the Wales and West Region for Better Energy School Award for Excellence in Environmental Education for their Plastic Campaign. They won  £500 for the school.
