St John the Baptist CofE Primary School - In Touch with Nature project
Thanks to Roots & Shoots we have managed to successfully enhance our outdoors as per our proposal.
The two ponds are in place and we have used them for pond dipping as part of our forest school provision. Each class are timetabled now throughout the year to experience the thrill of finding the many creatures and insects that now inhabit these ponds.
The vegetable growing plots were built and used by the children to plant, harvest and then cook with their produce. Potato and onion soup has been a real hit!
The sensory garden is now fully established and the children with SEN enjoyed many lessons in the area during the warm summer months, using their senses and writing about textures, smells and the images these created. We also used this are as part of religious education to think about Gods creation and the wonders within it.
The wild flower meadow was planted, but has yet to blossom fully, we are keeping our fingers crossed for a delight of wild flowers in the spring.
The children have benefited greatly from the grant as they have had new experiences in nature and we have the legacy ongoing meaning that many more children for many years to come will be growing, pond dipping and learning about nature.
