Discovering Teach Earth
Earthwatch have been working with Roots & Shoots since 2010 offering teachers and educators who have shown outstanding contributions in the Awards Programme, fully funded places on our Teach Earth training weekends. We are thrilled to once again be supporting this fantastic programme by offering another 3 places on our Teach Earth weekends in 2019.On our Teach Earth weekends, you’ll learn about outdoor experiments through citizen science. The training aims to improve teacher confidence in outdoor learning through providing structured and robust real-science activities which you can share with your students. It provides a tangible link between science, nature and the environment by increasing awareness and knowledge of local and global environmental issues. Our free take-home materials, kits and lesson plans on science projects and the UN Sustainable Development Goals fit into the national curriculum. In 2018 we were able to offer a place to Charlotte Goode, a Teaching Assistant from the Leicester Children’s Hospital School. Charlotte works with students aged 11-16 who have mental health issues which means they cannot access or attend mainstream schools.“By attending the Teach Earth weekend it gave me lots of ideas that we can do in school and give the students the opportunity to be part of something bigger. By taking part in the experiments the students that I work with can see that the data they are collecting means something, which is important for them. Getting the students outside that I work with can be difficult at times as a lot of them struggle with social anxiety and being outside can be scary for them. For us to get the students to access the outdoors is important not only for their physical health but their mental health as well. It is trying to teach the students that it is ok to be outdoors and being able to link this to the curriculum has been a huge support to the students and staff.” Charlotte Goode.
